DEVIOUS DENTIST
3D MODELING, CHARACTER DESIGN, ILLUSTRATION
When I was assigned a self-directed project in one of my design courses at Miami University, I was quick to design a project that would help me learn a new skill; the 3D software Blender. With a love for storytelling and character design, I worked to incorperate all of my passions into telling an intriguing story through 3D modeling, scene and character design, and illustration to bring the concept of this devious dentist to life.
PROCESS
RESEARCH
Because the original goal of this project was to learn basic 3D modeling skills through Blender, I gathered a variety of scene references that I could use to inform my own personal creation. I found that the scenes that inspired me the most were the ones that implied a more complicated history, such as the bloody classroom, so I decided that my scene would need to tell a story as well.
SKETCHING
I brainstormed a variety of different room scenes that might tell an interesting story about it’s inhabitant, and after recieving feedback from my peers, the sketch of an “evil dentist” themed room felt the most unique and interesting. I decided to proceed with this approach where I would model the room and design the malicious dentist who used it.
CHARACTER DESIGN
When creating the visuals for this dentist, I gathered references of other villainous character illustrations and came up with various directions that I could go to best communicate the character. I iterated on his face and appearance before finalizing the design into an abbreviated reference sheet and color palette.
SCENE MODELING
We then hosted our client for an ideation session where we brainstormed different ways that our team could benefit their organization. I illustrated ideas brought up by the client in real time and we discussed and made notes of the pros and cons of each to help us narrow down our deliverables.
