BRANDING, ENVIRONMENTAL GRAPHICS

During my time at Miami University’s Finance and Business Services Marketing department, I was tasked with rebranding a previously existing sushi dining concept in the Armstrong Student Center food court. The client wanted a total redesign of the concept before it’s reimplementation, and I explored a variety of visual identities in order to find one that best suited the space and concept.

PROCESS

RESEARCH

I began by breaking down the dining concept for the audience, being students, staff, and guests at Miami University. I also wanted to include elements that tied the branding to the culture that the cuisine originated from, being Japan, so I collected references of modern and historical Japanese design in order to inspire branding directions.

DELIVERABLES

EXPLORATION

I used my research and creative freedom to explore a wide variety of branding directions from more illustrative, mascot-based approaches to simple and minimal styles. I wanted to create unexpected and fascinating directions, so I used unusual inspiration such as metal music and Japanese mascot culture to inform some of my explorations.

The environmental graphics were installed at the Armstrong Student Center in the summer of 2023 serving an enrollment of 16,478 students on the Oxford campus and are still in use as the official visual identity of the Sumeshi dining concept as of this webpage’s release in the winter of 2024.
